One and a half years into my Alexander Technique Teacher Training I had an epiphany that Alexander Technique ( AT ) is about movability not position. When I asked for my head to move at my spine and all of me to respond as I lay in bed, my ribs moved and my breathing eased and I let go of all the striving to do something extra and find a right position.
The Alexander Process is about movability - an invitation to move....
Ask for ease at the head spine joint so your head can move and
your whole body can respond so that you can do whatever you want to do.
The Alexander Technique is about movability not position.
Its about undoing rather than doing.
It is about becoming aware of tightening and bracing in activity and recognizing it as un-necessary and extraneous.
Intrinsic in all of us is 'good use'.. We all had it as toddlers. Fear, striving, competing, yearning for approval or recognition, are some of the reasons we began the habitual tightening of the head - spine joint before activity.
AT is about recognising and peeling off these interferences and restoring this intrinsic 'good use'
It is primarily at joints that tightening and restriction happens - The head spine joint ( Master Joint ) and the other major joints - hip knees ankles wrist elbow shoulders jaw etc.. I am going to do an extended section on MOVABILITY focusing on each of these joints. I pray you will discover more ease in your joints as a result.
